Pit Bike Party

Brock - he's only 5 and is such a good rider. His bike was so awesome!
Matt & Madi
Rick & Gavin
Josh & Jett
Jed & Kate - she just wanted to keep riding and riding and riding

Five years ago we bought our house because of the property. It has the pretty cool ravine that we cleaned out with some big equipment the year we moved in. We haven't hardly used it since then, but finally had our 1st Pit Bike Party this weekend. It happened to be Marshall's birthday, so we had a good excuse to have a party. Jed spent Friday night on the tractor making the track, it turned out pretty good.

All the kids got to go for rides, and we had some adult only riding as well. We had tons of good food and a great bar-be-que. Looking forward to the next party!

Big Girl Bed

Kate was just getting too close to falling out, plus she had spent 5 nights straight in our bed, a first for her and us. I think she got too big for her crib and couldn't roll around enough, because when she did sleep in our bed she took up 90% of it.
It was a much simpler transition than I anticipated. Yes, I did sleep with her a few nights, but after only about a week, she's going to sleep all by herself. Of course she has to follow her bed time routine pretty closely, and doesn't let us forget. Bath, play, read, prayers. If we forget the prayer, she fold her arms and yells "PRAYER". If we forget a book, she yells "BOOK". You get the picture. Plus she has to have all 5 animals sleep with her, and her blanket. So cute, until you can't find one of the animals.

He's Home!!!

Sorry for the delay, got to come home from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He's doing well and is eating on his own, although he is still on the soft food diet (mashed potatoes, soup, pudding, ice cream). He is fine having visitors, just be aware that he still does rest/sleep a lot during the day, so he might not get to visit with you. Thanks again for all your support. My dad is amazed that he has so many friends that care about him.

He's Coming Home

He is now free of his epideral and all IV's. He's eating much better (the better he eats, the sooner he gets out of there).

The plan is that he get's to come home tomorrow. He can't wait, he is sooooo ready to be out of the hopsital and has been doing long walks and eating very well today so that he can go home in the morning.

Thank you so much for all of your support through this. He still has many hurdles to overcome over the next few months, but at least he's got the big ones knocked down. You may not know how much my dad appreciates all of you and the cards, flowers, posts and comments. It cheered him up to know how many people cared. Thank you so much.

Sunday Evening Update

He is doing well and is actually eating sort of real food (pudding, chicken broth, ice cream, apple juice and milk). He has been moved him to room 5504, it has a great view of the city. He has appreciated all the visitors, it sure cheers him up to know how many people care about him.

He should be getting his epideral out tomorrow and hopefully his IV as soon as he gets his calorie intake up. Once he has is IV out, it's a step closer to going home. Thanks again for all the cards, comments and posts - he really enjoys it. Thanks!

Friday Evening Update

His leak test went well, no leaks! He will be starting liquids tomorrow!

Dave would also like to have some visitors starting tomorrow! He is in room 5511 at Huntsman. He may be a bit tired, so don't feel bad if he falls asleep on you, it's not the company it's the drugs :)

Thursday Night Update

Things are going great. Dave even made his 1st phone call this evening and had me post his own words on facebook! And again another small miracle - his test on his lymph nodes came back and they were all clear! I'm up at the hospital now and he's actually having a conversation with me - he's not so sleepy anymore.

Tomorrow is going to be a big day as they are doing the "leak" test. They'll have him drink a concoction and then x-ray him for leaks. He said he thinks that he can have visitors on Saturday (again, I'll keep you posted). Well, we're off for another walk to go see the sunset. Thanks again!

Wednesday Night Update

Up at Huntsman now visiting my dad. He is in some pain and quite sleepy from the pain meds, but we're going for his fourth walk of the day shortly. He's doing pretty well to complete all his walks for the day. He still is not up for visitors, but appreciates the cards, flowers, comments and posts that have been left for him. I'll post when he's up for seeing some people. Thanks!

Update #5

We went to see my Dad again this evening. He is doing well, although he sleeps most of the time due to the pain medication. He's gotten up and walked around a few times (very short distances, but nonetheless, he is moving!) and sat up in a chair for a bit. We anticipate that he will like to have visitors on Friday, but I'll keep you posted.

I've been telling him the comments left here on the blog as well as on facebook and he has loved to hear how many people have been pulling for him. We told him his cell phone has been ringing non-stop and he said "I'm popular" with a little smirk :) Thanks again for all your support!

Update #4

Just got back from the hospital. He is doing so well that they are moving him out of the SICU and over to Huntsman this afternoon. He is pretty sleepy still but has been able to get out of bed and sit in a chair twice and walk to the door. I think that he can probably start having visitors tomorrow, but I'll let you know. I'll also post his contact info as soon as we know what room he is in.

Thank you for all your prayers and thoughts. We have no doubt that he has a lot of help right now. Everything so far has gone much better than we expected. He does have many many obstacles to overcome, but we are so happy and thankful that he is doing as well as he is.

Surgery Update #3

We just called up to the hospital and Dave is still doing well. He will be in the SICU at least through tomorrow and maybe until Wednesday. He has a breathing tube so they have sedated him through the night. They will most likely be taking the breathing tube out in the morning. That's the first step to leaving the SICU. The second step is to start using the feeding tube, which they will do shortly after they remove the breathing tube. He'll be allowed to have visitors as soon as he is out of the SICU and back over to Huntsman. I'll keep you posted.

Surgery Update #2

Surgery is complete and we just spoke with the Surgeon. The surgery went very well, only 2.5 hours. No complications so far. The surgeon feels that he should have a good recovery because the surgery went so well. We'll be heading the the ICU shortly to see him and I'll post shortly.

Surgery Update #1

Dave went in for surgery at about 2:15. We expect him to be in there for about 3-4 hours. We spoke with the surgeon before the surgery and he felt that Dave's surgery would go very well and he wasn't concerned about it. I'll post updates as we get them. Thanks.

Dave Andersen's Surgery

My dad is going in for Surgery tomorrow to remove his esophagus. For those of you who don't know, here's a quick summary. He was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma (esophageal cancer) in January as a stage 4. He has been through 6 weeks of radiation and chemo which shrunk the tumor slightly. The next step is surgery to remove his esophagus. This is a pretty major surgery, but we are very hopeful for a good outcome.

We've decided to post updates here on the blog as well on facebook (Dave now has a facebook page).
He'll be in the ICU probably until Wednesday and then still be in the hospital for an additional 8 days. You all know my dad, and you know he'll be bored out of his mind within an hour of being at the hospital. Letters and cards are greatly appreciated, please drop them off in the crock on the porch at Andersen's and we'll take them up to him. Comments on the blog or facebook are also appreciated as Dave will be checking on them and would love to hear from people. We're hoping that reading cards, browsing through blog comments and facebook walls will give him some sanity. We'll post when visitors are welcome as well as all the updates and any contact information. Thanks in advance for all your support.

Memorial Day Weekend - St. Anthony

Kate's new riding gear.

Riding on the 4-wheeler with Dad - Kate's favorite!

My Dad is going in for his big surgery next week, so we took a last trip to St. Anthony Sand Dunes since he probably won't be camping or riding for some time. We pulled in late Friday night and spent the night in the Walmart parking lot (free camping !!!). Saturday was a bit cold so we left the Kate with the Grandparents at the trailer and took a short wet ride. Since it was raining, we headed to town for dinner and the boys caught a movie. Sunday was much better weather so we took Kate out in Rex. Of course she fell asleep, it's a pretty cushy ride.

Monday was the best weather, too bad we couldn't stay all day. My dad, Marshall, Jed and I took a last ride over on the big hills. I got "stuck" in a small bowl and had to be rescued by Jed. On the way back to camp we hit Eigen lakes. Marshall and Jed like to wheelie through the ponds. Jed tried to drive through one section, but it was a bit deeper than he anticipated, and he ended up wading out with water up to his waist. Too bad I didn't have the camera with me. Can't wait for the next trip!
